Symptoms Of Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis infection gets transmitted through sexual intercourse from the penis to the vagina or through vulva to vulva contact when an uninfected person gets involved in a sexual activity with an infected partner. Trichomoniasis is also transmitted through the sharing of fomites such as towels, bedding, and clothing used by infected people.
Although both women and men can get infected, women are usually more susceptible. Trichomonas vaginalis parasite can get transmitted to women from infected men or women, but in men the parasite is usually contracted only from infected women partners.
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis begin to manifest themselves within 5 to 28 days of contracting the infection, although sometimes the manifestation of symptoms may take as long as 6 months. In women, the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite commonly enters and affects the vagina but in men, the parasite usually infests the urethra.
In women, the symptoms of Trichomoniasis include a yellowish green or gray vaginal discharge, which can appear bubbly or frothy and have a very bad fishy odor. Sometimes, traces of blood may also be present in the discharge. The infected woman will usually experience pain during urination and also during sexual intercourse. This is commonly accompanied by a persistent and severe itching sensation or irritation in the genital area. These symptoms may also be accompanied by a persistent dull pain in the lower abdominal area.
In men, the infection of Trichomoniasis is most commonly asymptomatic although mild symptoms such as a diluted white discharge from the penis accompanied by a tingling sensation or burning during urination or ejaculation are not uncommon.
