Smoking Bans Overview

The adverse effect of smoking on ones health has been a known fact as early as cigarette and other tobacco products were first made. Several individuals of highest authority have one way or the other made pronouncement of banning the use of tobacco products. And through the years, penalties for violating smoking ban have varied from the heaviest to the lightest penalties that could be possible imposed on smoking ban violators.

The history of smoking ban pre-dates back to as early as 1590 when then Pope Urban VII issued the first known public smoking ban. Pope Urban VII warned to excommunicate those who use tobacco or even at the least brings tobacco within the premises of churches worldwide. The history of smoking ban continues in 1624 when Pope Urban VIII issued a stern worldwide smoking ban and threatens to excommunicate those found guilty as well of using or bringing tobacco products in the premise of the church. However, these two smoking ban were later repealed by Pope Benedict XIII who himself was a tobacco user.

From then on, other world dignitaries and rulers have each in their own capacity contributed to the history of smoking ban through the years. In 1633, the Sultan Murad IV of the Ottoman Empire issued smoking ban within his jurisdiction and executes those who disobey the smoking ban. In 1634, Czar Michael of Russia contributed to the history of smoking ban and warns violators that they will be treated as criminals which can be penalized by death.

In 1646, in Massachusetts, the General Court bans smoking for all its citizens unless they are five miles away from the town. And in the following year, the Colony of Connecticut limits the smoking of its citizen to one stick a day.

Continuing the history of smoking ban, in 1891 Iranians lead by the Grand Ayatollah Haji Mirza Hasan Shirazi ban the trading of any tobacco products which had started the Tobacco rebellion.

Moving forward in 1895 in North Dakota, the history of smoking ban continues with the banning of cigarette trading which is followed by twenty six years of anti-smoking policy which was only repealed in 1927.

Even one of the famous tyrants in world history, Adolf Hitler contributed to the history of smoking ban by imposing heavy taxes on tobacco products. During the 20th century, the tobacco industry has become a significant economic contributor so much so that smoking ban had to be stopped. Nonetheless, there were some awareness drives on respecting the right of smokers and the non-smokers. Legislations were passed in the US to provided separate areas for smokers in public places.

To date, the history of smoking continues with majority of the states in the US prohibiting smoking in public places and providing stiff penalties to violators. Other countries especially in the UK have equal legislations and policies which ban smoking in public places. Penalties for violating smoking ban vary from one country to another which ranges from imprisonment to paying of fines.
