When building and promoting a new site one of the first thoughts that enters a webmasters site building strategy is how to build a solid page rank, and rank highly for specific keywords and phrases within Google. Nothing wrong with that I hear you say, well I agree, however there is an easier way to get Google to notice your site without ever having the Google spiders crawl all over your new online venture.

Google receives well over 40% (if not more) of all web search traffic, this means that for any particular keyword or phrase, you are competing with a huge amount of websites all trying to get their site into the first few pages of Google`s results, that in itself is an incredibly hard task. It is possible to get up the rankings of google but it is a long, hard and slow process. If time and money are no object then this method is not a problem.

An easier option is the exact same premise as described but dedicating your webpage optimisation for "smaller" search engines e.g. MSN Search and Yahoo. As a percentage of traffic they are both around the 8 to 10% mark for total searches, but because most other sites are trying to get google to notice them it is easier to climb the rankings of MSN and Yahoo and any other search engine for that matter.

Its a simple case of numbers, if MSN ranks you on page 1 for your particular search term and gets you lots of hits per day, what is there to stop you doing the same for 9 other terms or phrases and with other search engines, gaining a lot more hits in the process. To get the same sort of traffic from Google alone would take a lot more effort and a would take a lot longer to achieve!

Its the old saying of "its easier to improve 10 things by 1% than improve 1 thing by 10%" The same can be said for search engines, ranking on page 10 of google requires more effort than ranking on page 1 of less popular search engines, the net result is about the same amount of traffic but with less effort. There is one other side effect of ranking highly on other search engines, Google will notice your site and start to spider it quicker than if you try with Google on its own.
