Oolong Tea

Oolong Tea is also known as wulong or wu-long tea. The word Oolong means "Black Dragon", a title derived from the large, bulky dark tea leaves from the Wuyi Shan. Some also believe that the shape of this tea resembles the Chinese Dragon.

The Fujian Province is the home of Chinese Oolongs. It comes from the same tea plant Cameillia Sinesis but undergoes a different processing method. The major difference between the types of tea is their degree of oxidation (exposure to oxygen). The longer a tea is oxidized, the darker the colour it is and the more thearubigins it contains. Thearubigins contribute to the reddish and brownish colour that is a characteristic of oxidized tea.

Oolong teas undergo a partial oxidation. This can vary from 10 to 80 percent depending on the type of tea. The huge range of oxidation creates of a great variety of excellent Oolong teas with many attributes.

Teas that are light oxidized are more fruity or flowerly with wonderful floral aromas to accompany them. Those that are more fully oxidized are darker and have a deep rich flavour more akin to black tea. The darker teas have a wood and oaky aroma. This tea is also recommended and recognized especially for its weight loss properties.

Oolong tea has many health benefits associated with it. One of the more recognized attributes of this brew is that it aids with weight loss. Studies have shown that Oolong tea has the effect of blocking the absorption of fats and carbohydrates and therefore it is key in reducing weight. To find out more, visit my website.
