More Dangers of Smoking
Thousands of people die each year from passive smoking. Contrary to popular belief 9usually held amongst active smokers) the risks are not reduced if you simply inhale the smoke of others. The risks of heart disease, respiratory disease and cancer remain the same.
Generally smokers will live twelve years less than non-smokers and in America, it is a fact that more people die from tobacco-related deaths than Aids, drugs, homicides, fires and road traffic accidents combined.
An amazing statistic.
Children of smokers have an increased risk of cot death, meningitis, asthma, respiratory disease and cancer. This damage, for some children, will start while they are still in the womb, causing them birth defects, educational problems and being small and vulnerable at birth.
The longer someone smokes, potentially the more damage you cause and the greater the quantity smoked, the bigger the risk to health and well being.
Nicotine stimulates the nervous system causing the heart rate to rise and increases the blood pressure. The carbon monoxide content in cigarettes also increases heart rate and shortness of breath, as it sticks to the red blood cells, interfering with their ability to carry oxygen around the body. In this way, vital organs are deprived of their normal oxygen.
Each cigarette contains 4,000 chemicals of which at least sixty are known to cause cancer. Others, such as lead, are known to cause brain, kidney, liver and nervous system damage.
I understand that smoking is an addiction and one that is very hard to kick but with information readily available, not just about the health risks but also the lethal cocktail of poisons and carcinogens in each cigarette, I find it hard to understand why this is still such a popular pastime.
