CFS Revealed - 3 Periods in the History of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Report 1 of 3

(As you begin this report, please note one thing. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is not a health problem located solely within the boundaries of the United States. Different forms of the illness can be seen around the world. Often it is called by other names, such as ME or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a term coined in Europe. Currently in the US, there is a grass roots effort to change the name of CFS to possibly ME-CFS, short for Myalgic Encephalopathy-Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.)

Period #1: When people first became aware of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or CFS a long, long time ago, no one knew what it was. The medical profession routinely dismissed patients with symptoms of headache, easy fatigability (especially after exertion), loss of appetite, intestinal problems, sweating, chills, stiff backs and necks, weakness, pain, insomnia, impaired memory, mood swings, and hair loss. Often patients were called malingerers or were written off simply as being "hysterical." Doctors studied individual symptoms and remedies, but no individual or group brought forth a clear body of knowledge about the illness as a whole.

A. In the late 1800s, the term "neurasthenia" became the popular diagnosis term. Symptoms of neurasthenia (also called muscular rheumatism) included weakness, dizziness and fainting. People hurt; they were really sick. Life became tough for such individuals, however almost no one took them seriously.

B. In the twentieth century, skeptics called the illness "yuppie flu" or "shirker syndrome." Little changed to help the patient afflicted with the ailment.

C. In the twenty-first century, we know that the universe of symptoms associated with Neurasthenia is inconclusive. Now, finally, modern day physicians and researchers are delving further than ever into the malady called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. After millions of dollars of private and government-funded research, still only a few, preliminary answers have surfaced about this incredibly complicated condition. Some people suspect that there are multiple sub-groups of patients carrying the same, singular label. If that is true, we are not dealing with one condition, but many.

For the purposes of learning about all three stages of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that document its place in history, look up all three reports. The more you know, the better equipped you are to deal with it. The other reports are titled, Report 2 and Report 3.
