Acid Reflux (GERD) - What is It? - How to Relieve It with Alkaline Water!

Acid Reflux or GERD is the backward flow of highly acidic stomach juices into the esophagus due to faulty functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is a muscular ring which is normally closed to prevent the reverse flow of stomach acid.

The cause of GERD is not totally understood. It is felt there are multiple causes and any individual may be subject to one or many causes at the same time or at different times in different combinations. A small number of acid reflux sufferers produce abnormally large amounts of acid, but this is not usual in the vast majority of cases.

The action of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is key in preventing the reverse flow of stomach contents. The esophagus is the tube of muscle that transports the food from the throat to the stomach. The LES is a specialized ring of muscle that surrounds the lower-most end of the esophagus where it joins the stomach. This muscle is active most of the time continually contracting and closing off the passage from the esophagus into the stomach thus preventing reflux. When food or saliva is swallowed, the LES relaxes for a few seconds to allow the food or saliva to pass from the esophagus into the stomach, and then it closes again.

When this muscle gets damaged, often due to a hernia, and begins to malfunction then the burning sensations of “heartburn” begin to occur. These pains can be extremely debilitating especially after a high sugar, protein or fatty meal which trigger the creation of more stomach acid than usual.

Eventually this acid which often lies in the esophagus during sleep can seriously damage the esophagus often leading to cancer.

Many sufferers have found that drinking alkaline water every day, especially before and after meals will neutralize this acid in a natural way and bring immediate relief from symptoms.

If you create your own alkaline water with an ionizer then you bring the added healing benefit of a powerful anti-oxidant into your life.

Tea Time - A Guide to the Four Basic Types of Tea

A cup of tea can help you get your morning started or aid in relaxation after a long and stressful day. You can warm up on a cold winter day with a steaming mug of your favorite tea, or you can cool down on a summer afternoon with a tall, refreshing, glass of iced tea. Not only does it taste great hot or cold, but it can also help you stay healthy.

With a variety of tea that seem to come in ever color of the rainbow and every flavor possible, walking down the tea aisle at your local grocery store can be a perplexing event. The truth of the matter is that there are basically four groups of tea and most of your favorite will fall into those categories.

  • Black Tea: The process of making Black tea is a long process that eventually results in the oxidation and fermentation of the tea leaves. This fermentation process results the darkening of the tea leaves to a deep red or black color. Black Tea is one of the more common flavored teas. Under the umbrella of black teas are some common flavors such as Darjeeling and an assortment of breakfast teas.

Benefits: It is believed that black tea can help digestion, improve cholesterol, and possibly reduce tooth decay. While there is caffeine in black tea its not as potent your morning cup of coffee and can often give you that needed boost without the jitters.

  • Green Tea: Green tea is made from leaves that do not go through oxidization. They are picked and then steamed or pan fried to prevent any fermentation. Although it doesnt sound extremely appetizing this popular tea is often described as tasting earthy like grass. It has a light and refreshing flavor and depending on the type, can range from sweet to a little bitter.
  • Benefits:Green tea is credited with helping your body fight off cancer, some types of arthritis, and high cholesterol. It also can be a great boost to your immune system.

  • Oolong Tea: Oolong Tea is less oxidized than black tea but does go through some oxidation unlike green tea. Most tea drinkers describe oolong as having a earthy/grass taste similar to Green tea, however its slightly stronger.
  • Benefits: While its not yet proven, there is some research being done into the impact oolong tea has on weight control. Besides that, oolong tea is credited with aiding digesting and cleansing the body from the inside out.

  • White Tea: White tea can be thought of the unripe fruit of the tea world. Made from young or immature leaves that have yet to undergo oxidation, white tea is probably the most expensive and rarest form of tea. Although it recently has become more available in the United States, it was originally hard to find anywhere else besides China. White tea is often said to have a smooth sweet flavor.
  • Benefits: The flavor alone isnt a reason why white tea is becoming so popular in the US. This tea is credited with being the healthiest form of tea because its so close to its natural state. Some of the benefits of white tea come from the high amount of cancer fighting anti-oxidants as well as its ability to aid your immune system in fighting off bacteria and viruses.

Outsourcing Checklist for the Service Buyer

Here is a Checklist for the Service Buyer. This should give any one looking to outsource a project a good reference point not only for starting a project, but for seeing it through to its completion as well. Outsourcing can, and should increase your productivity and the profitability of your project. A poorly run outsourcing job however, can be just as costly as one run in-house.

  • Define the job completely, including any specifics about programming, compatibility, writing styles, timelines, deadlines, or anything else which may leave any room for doubt. Include styles, preferences, colors, layouts and any other specifics, which may be applicable to this job. Save the description and include it in the advertisement for the Service Provider if possible.
  • Decide whether it is more beneficial to find a service provider online or from a local source. If choosing online (Which is frequently the cheapest option, though it does not detract from quality as a rule) decide which site has the candidates who best suit your needs for this job.
  • If online, a budget must be made before the project can be posted. If you are seeking out a service provider online, decide how much you are willing to pay to have the project completed. If using a local area service provider, this information should be discussed during the interview process.
  • Review all of the applicants for the job. This should be done as time allows, for each service provider as they bid. If you are seeking people online, set aside a small amount of time each day to review the days applicants. Do not make a choice until the last day in order to avoid leaving out any potential providers.
  • Once a service provider has been selected, send them the complete package from step one. They should receive a complete outline of the project at hand. If this was provided in the advertisement, all the better, but still make sure that you send them a copy. In that way, if they do not complete the job as you requested, you are covered. Go over the package with them in detail. Make sure that every question is answered completely.
  • Make sure to maintain open lines of communications during the project. Lack of communication is the number one cause of problems in the outsourcing industry.
  • Be Certain to allow time for checking your products and making certain that they are up to your exact standards before the final payment is released. This is one of the most important reasons for using escrow services for payment. If there is a dispute that arises, you at least will not have to invest money into something that you cannot use.
  • Be certain to retain copies of all communications including phone calls. Anything that can be verified such as email or instant messages are certainly preferable, however this is not always an option. If you must discuss business on the telephone, record the date, time and content of the phone call and keep this with your records.

Presenting a Government Project to the American People

When the government wishes to promote a new project or social program to the American people it must be very careful to be able to clearly and concisely explain it. The program must be based or bathed in reality and containing a good portion of common sense. Of course the most important thing is it must be simple and easy to understand so that everyone can get the concept.

There must also be a secondary set of facts and figures for those who wish to check out the program and see if it is doable to help them better rationalize the viability of the project or program. It is not easy to present a new government project to the American people because the American people are inherently suspicious of new government programs, which will cost taxpayers money.

In fact, although most people trust the American government there are a large group of folks who didst trust the government and will immediately called any new program into question because of perceived past launched programs, which were botched. You can not please all the people all the time, but you must help the American people understand what it is that you are trying to do.

Additionally there should be a third set of scientific data and research to back up your program. And it must pass the smell test of common sense for the average citizen, as well as peer reviewed research. Please consider all this in 2006.

Public Speaking: Use Props to Make Your Presentation Memorable

    Presentation Tools

In the discussion of honing the art of presentation, the focus is quite often centered on the speakers talent, with little emphasis on the importance of the information they are being tasked to relate. It is obvious that the techniques associated with audience interaction comprise a large percentage of the formula for success. A good speaker can work around the weaknesses of their material, apply limited resources, overcome poorly packaged information, deal with time constraints, and still manage to get the point across well enough to produce the desired result - a happy and impressed audience.

By the same token, if the presenter must struggle with substandard material, difficult to manage tools, technology that does not work as planned, or inappropriate media formats, this situation can scuttle the effort to engage an audience as much as poor speaking techniques. Skillful application of visual aids allows the presenter to appeal to the audience on a variety of sensory levels. If you are an eloquent speaker, but your presentation is permeated with illegible, handwritten scrawling on an overhead projector or white board, the things being captured by the eyes become incongruent with the sounds reaching the ears. While you fumble with turning pages on a flip chart which contains information that is hard to see from the back of a room, or struggle to find the slides, programs, documents or locations of information on a disjointed computer based presentation, you are ensuring the need for you to compensate even more with your speaking talent.

Choosing the right tools for your presentation is a critical element of your success. You should always know ahead of time what sort of facility you will be working with, understand how your audience will be situated, and take the time you need to practice smooth interaction with all the visual aid devices you intend to use. Like performing in a theatrical production, your positioning, movements and stage presence should be as familiar as possible before you take center stage. Whether you are making a short sales presentation, or providing a week long training session, your audience will be quite sensitive to how much you ultimately struggle with visual aids and devices. Taking full advantage of the environmental influences is important to how well the information is received.

Packaging will always play a key role in the success or failure to reach an audience. By way of an analogy, if one person presents a valuable gift to you in a brown paper bag, and another offers you the same gift in a colorful, beautifully wrapped package, it is our nature to reach for the package that is most appealing. Even when the gift offered is identical in content, receiving it in a brown paper wrapper somehow diminishes its worth. You should avoid hastily prepared hand outs or information supplements that are not carefully prepared to appeal to the eye.

In recent years, computer based presentation aids have helped many people put together interesting and engaging visuals for projection to an audience. In working with this media, I truly enjoyed the extra zip I got from being able to demonstrate how a program works, or by showing a splendidly prepared sequence of slides in a PowerPoint presentation. One thing I did not enjoy about computer based visual aids was watching some presenters flipping through screen menus searching for the next element of their presentation, or struggling with starting up a program that did not seem to want to perform like the speaker was trying to illustrate that it should. I would find myself getting into the information set, only to find the rhythm interrupted by an interlude of fumbling and fiddling to bridge to the next point.

To overcome these limitations and choreograph a smoothly flowing presentation style that allowed me to maintain a good rhythm, I put together a control mechanism that allowed me to use one central interface to launch, sequence, and organize the separate elements into a congruent exhibition. The approach solved problems with interrupting my speaking to focus on beating the next level of information out of the computer, before continuing on with what I needed to relate. This method has worked well for several other people I have shared the tool with as well.

In putting together the right presentation style, solving issues with the tools you are using ahead of time will give you the confidence you need for resolving unanticipated problems you experience in front of your audience. By appealing to as many human senses as possible, your information will have a much better chance to be absorbed and appreciated by the audience. Since people learn through sensory input, relying only on speech to get a point across is limited. If you can devise ways to engage sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste into your presentations, you will be able to open up their receptors on all levels. They will absorb more information, and be able to retain it.

The Latest Drug for Smoking Cessation

Smoking is probably the most addictive habit out there today. There are many people who believe it is easier to kick the cocaine habit than it is to kick the nicotine habit. When trying to quit people go through withdrawals which include nervousness, insomnia, headache, weight gain, and irritability. For most people the strong urge to smoke sets them up for failure. There are a number of products available for smoking cessation. Some of these products act as a nicotine replacement which helps with withdrawal symptoms. The newest kid on the block offers a two-fold concept. Chantix has recently been approved by the FDA as a smoking cessation drug. Chantix is unique because it offers withdrawal relief along with blocking the pleasure nicotine delivers to the brain without being a nicotine replacement.

Smoking Hazards For people who are attempting to quit smoking there are three events which lead to failure; the strong desire for nicotine, the withdrawal symptoms, and the habit of lighting up and having something in your hands. Chantix is designed to help alleviate two of these events. It helps relieve withdrawal symptoms and if you smoke it prevents the pleasure you receive from the nicotine by the blocking the effect the nicotine has on the brain. There are a whole host of reasons why people should not smoke. Smoking has been linked to lung cancer, COPD, increased cholesterol levels, and even osteoporosis. The dangers not only exist for the smoker but for the people who are around the smoker as well. Second hand smoke has come to the forefront of society as a serious medical concern. Experts warn that pregnant women who smoke have an increased chance of birth defects and stunted fetal growth.

Society today will no longer accept smoking. More and more states are adopting smoking bans in public buildings and restaurants. Many employers prohibit smoking on their property and some will even terminate your employment if they discover you are a smoker. Smoking contributes to increased work days lost due to illness and there are many employers who simply will not accept it.

The introduction of Chantix offers help to those who have struggled to quit. By taking away the pleasure experienced when smoking if offers a real advantage over other smoking cessation products. It comes in a pill form which is taken either once or twice a day. Heavier smokers who have smoked for several years would probably do best on two pills a day. It is available only by prescription and can be taken for up to twenty four weeks. If you have a desire to quit and are willing to give Chantix a try you might find the solution you have been looking for. Talk to your doctor today and begin your smoke-free life tomorrow.

    • battery- the battery can be on standby for approximately 320 hours.
    • charger.
    • wired stereo handset HS-47.
    • 256 MB Micro SD memory card.
    • Micro USB cable CA - 101.
    • TV-out Cable CA 92-U.
    • User guide.

This phone comes along with enough accessories for you to use this device to its full potential. If your thinking the memory card is too small, let me remind you that the phone officially supports up to 4 GB memory which happens to be the maximum for this standard.

The Nokia 6500 slide bears some resemblance to the N95. The cell phone supports all the regular features that 3G offers. It also allows audio or video downloading and streaming.
The device has a multi format video and music player onboard; it also has an FM radio. This phone is ideal for all music lovers.

The phone is a little heavier than the N95 but it is comfortable to hold. It does not feel like it will slip suddenly. Like every other Nokia phone, the 6500 is a sturdy and strong phone. The 3.2 mega pixel camera is placed on the reverse side of the phone. The cell is available in both the silver and black colour. The body of the phone is stainless steel, the body has a nice brushed look and a hard coating which seems like it will protect your phone from hideous scratches.

All in all Nokia 6500 slide phone is a neat phone to opt for especially if you like the reliabilty and ease of use that is associated with the Finnish giant that now controls 60% of the market.

    A Team That Gleamed

Too many techies get a bad rap for lacking teamwork and communications skills. The stereotype is that while techies are great at what they are trained to do, they cannot parlay their knowledge onto others. Because of the stereotype that techies cannot communicate, they also can be stigmatized that they lack adequate teamwork skills. So, what are the chances of two Helpdesk teams communicating with each other to successfully form one team while not compromising customer service?

Does this plan initially sound like an enormous task? Does it sound impossible? Not if you were lucky enough to have been on such a dynamite team like mine.

In 1997, I started working at the Ameritech Advertising Helpdesk, which was supporting Yellow Pages Salespeople, Artists and Data Entry from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin. When Southwestern Bell Corporation acquired Ameritech in 1998, procedures started to change. Ultimately, The Ameritech Advertising Helpdesk became the SBC Yellow Pages Helpdesk and we were to support clients not only in the five-state Great Lakes region, but clients in other regions in which SBC resided. SBC had Yellow Pages clients in the east in Connecticut, in the middle of the country in Missouri and Kansas, in the southwest in Oklahoma and Texas and in the west in Arizona, Nevada and California.

There were two Helpdesks: the Helpdesk who supported clients in the Great Lake region and the Helpdesk that supported clients in the eastern, middle, southwestern and western regions. The Helpdesk supported clients 24/7 during the weekdays, a part of Saturday and was on call for Sunday. The Great Lakes Helpdesk had about seven to eight dayshift personnel, two afternoon people and one mid-nighter. The eastern, middle, southwestern and western region Helpdesk had about eight to ten personnel that worked different hours from 7 a.m. until 10p.m. eastern time.

The grand plan was to combine both Helpdesks and have all of the analysts versatile in all of the applications in order to support clients from all of the 13 states. For example, most of the analysts who supported clients in the Great Lakes region had never worked with VMS systems, but were very familiar with systems like the Remedy Helpdesk software. Conversely, most of the analysts who supported clients in the eastern, middle, southwester and western U.S. had been trained on the VMS systems, but had never worked with Remedy.

Being in Information Technology, one may get used to systems and applications going wrong. It seems that in too many instances, techies are troubleshooting and fixing systems.

So, how did combining operations go without sacrificing customer service?

    1. It was about a six-month plan, which started around February 2002 to gradually adjust analysts from both Helpdesks. One analyst from each Helpdesk was trained for several months before supporting clients in all 13 states.

    2. Both Helpdesks were in different parts of the Call Center. A couple of analysts from both Helpdesks switched desks in order to familiarize each other with systems.

    3. Management was very supportive of the transition and realized that there was a learning curve during the transition.

    4. There were two analysts from both Helpdesks called Helpdesk Advocates, who were the liaison between the analysts and management. Both Advocates communicated the analysts concerns to management.

    5. Clients were informed that both Helpdesks were in the process of being combined and to please be as understanding as possible during the transition.

    6. Every analyst was receptive to any question from other analysts. Every analyst was in the same boat so to speak. Every analyst knew that he or she would have questions about systems in which he or she was not as familiar. How every analyst handled any question from a coworker would reflect the way in which he or she would be treated when he or she had a question. It was the human nature aspect.

    7. Every analyst had a desire to learn.

    8. Every analyst had a willingness to train

    9. If an analyst could learn one system, he or she could learn other systems.

    10. Every analyst was a team player. Although there were folks who had years and even decades of experience on some systems, no one was too good to help out any analyst who had never worked with a particular system. The fact that every analyst was cooperative during the transition made it an enormous success.

This is what I personally learned from the experience:

    1. Teamwork is not about individuals. When a clients problem was solved, it was the whole Helpdesk that triumphed.

    2. When superstars play as a team, the team will ultimately win. Every member of the team was a superstar who played as a team and we ultimately won in transitioning both Helpdesks.

    3. Every analyst proved that they could parlay their knowledge and translate that language to other analysts and clients.

    4. Perception and reality may be two completely different things. I knew very little about the folks at the other Helpdesk. When I got to know them, they were as wonderful as the folks whom I already knew at my own Helpdesk.

    5. Teamwork is all about dealing with people. What you make of your relationships is up to you.

    6. It is amazing what a team can do when it is up to the challenge. My team only had a certain amount of time to transition its operations and we did it!

    7. Sometimes just a desire to learn can make the difference between success and failure.

    8. Investment in relationships with people is invaluable with a rewarding rate of return.

    9. Random acts of kindness

    10. You can actually appeal to peoples better nature and not just their self-interest.

Everyone involved displayed so much cooperation and willingness to train no matter how many times they were asked a question. Everyone involved during the transition should be very proud that they were part of that awesome period and it is something that they can take with them anywhere else they go. All of us were a part of a group that needed to implement the greatest effort of teamwork or we were not going to make the transition.

Considering that three shifts were involved makes the event even more a source of pride for all of those who were involved. Any person on the team could be approached and they were more than willing to help with any question. We were an example to follow and we certainly set a great standard for teamwork!!

Teamwork is all about people. Those in technical professions are people too. No matter what your profession, people in technology have great skills like everyone else. My team broke the stereotype that techies cannot communicate well and are not team players. Its not your profession that determines what makes you a great team player, its who you are. Its not how much people skills that you possess, its what you do with those people skills that matter.

This article is dedicated to the one of those great team members, Monica Mitchell, who died of pulmonary embolism on Wednesday, November 5th, 2003. May Gods grace be with you always, Monica. For those of us who had the pleasure to have worked with her, we will greatly miss you.

Training / Presentations: How to Begin a Lesson Plan

DEVELOPING LESSON PLANS: In developing lesson plan formats, two things are paramount: extraordinarily careful documentation and room left for possible changes. Sloppy accounting of the direction your class will be going is worse than none. And documentation that doesnt have leeway for change is almost instantly obsolete. The types of plan formats generally used are the: outline, sentence outline, narrative outline, narrative. The primary difference is in the amount of information and narrative in the body of the presentation. Your plan for a presentation should be at least a sentence outline or preferably a narrative outline.

READING LESSON PLANS: All maps have common information, called the legend, which tells you how to read them. The lesson plan should also have a legend (the cover sheet) which tells the trainer what the learning environment will be. The cover sheet includes the course title, the lesson title, the length of time for the lesson, the target audience, the performance objectives, the evaluation procedures, and the equipment and supplies needed for you and your students. Although your department may have a specific format for this information the purpose is more important than the format.

MAKING INFORMATIVE LESSON PLANS: –The course title or lesson title should accurately reflect the content of the lesson or course and be stated simply. –The length of time for the lesson should include time required for lesson presentation and suggested time, date, and hour at which lesson delivery would be most effective. –The target population entry shgould answer several questions. What skill level will the trainees have? Is the content appropriate for the audience? Will the audience be homogeneous, or a mixed group of people with different backgrounds, ages, and job skills?

    Summer Party Tips

Summer is a great time for parties. You can be outside in the sun. You can eat great foods and enjoy the company of good friends. Throwing a summer party, though, does have its challenging moments. You need some tips for your summer party so you can throw the best party of the block. Lucky for you, here are some top tips that will keep your party going strong and make your guests happy they were invited.

    Think Cool

You have to consider the weather when you plan a summer party. While the weather is one of the best things about a summer party it can also be the worst. Depending on where you live you could be dealing with record topping temperatures or super sticky humidity. You need to keep this in mind.

Plan your party for the coolest part of the day. Provide guests with plenty to drink to keep the hydrated. You may wish to avoid alcohol until later in the evening since it can actually be dehydrating. You should also make sure there is plenty of shade to keep guests from getting a nasty sunburn.

Make sure you have the right environment. If you have a backyard pool then you have the perfect summer party setting. However, if you do not have a backyard pool then you may need to get creative. If your guests have children you might want to provide a kiddie pool or even sprinklers for them to run through to cool down.

A great way to cap off the party is serving frozen drinks and icy desserts. This will really help to cool everyone down.

You top priority is going to be making sure that your guests are not sweating their butts off. Nobody can have fun when they are hot and sticky. You need to ensure that everyone is comfortable. Offer an inside getaway when the heat gets to be too much.

    Things to Avoid

You want to avoid some things at a summer party so that you can give your guests the best atmosphere and the highest level of comfort. You will want to avoid foods that are too hot. You do not want to be bland with your food choices, but at the same time you will want to think cool, even with the food. Think light foods that are not heavy on the stomach which can cause discomfort in the heat of summer.

Watch out for melting. You will want to serve cold foods, like ice cream, but they come with a challenge. You have to plan carefully or you will be left with ice cream soup.

Overall your summer party is going to be a blast if everyone is comfortable and having a good time. Do not stress yourself out to the point where you can not have a good time. You will want to make sure that you plan carefully and consider all the challenges of the hot temperatures. With that in mind you should throw a wonderful bash.
